Plot Summary

Harbin Movie Ending Explained: In 1909, resistance fighter Ahn Jung-Geun, who is fighting against Japan’s control of Korea, struggles across the frozen Tumen River. Meanwhile, his fellow fighters doubt his loyalty and wonder where he has been. When Ahn returns, his leadership is questioned because many of his men died in a recent successful attack on the Japanese. Ahn had refused to execute prisoners of war, including officer Tatsuo Mori, and instead set them free. However, Mori later found Ahn’s group and killed them using cannons.
Determined to redeem himself, Ahn Jung-Geun plans to assassinate Itō Hirobumi, Japan’s Prime Minister and former Resident-General of Korea. Itō is traveling by train from China to Harbin, a Russian-controlled area, to meet with Vladimir Kokovtsov, the Russian Finance Minister, to discuss Korea’s future.
Does Ahn manage to assassinate Japan’s Prime Minister, Itō Hirobumi?

Ahn Jung-Geun leads a team, including Woo Deok-sun and Kim Sang-hyun, on a train to Vladivostok. The conductor hears them speaking Korean in a first-class carriage and alerts the Japanese soldiers. In the resulting fight, Kim is knocked out of the window, and Ahn manages to escape.
Ahn reaches a safehouse in Vladivostok, where the team regroups, but reinforcements from Korea take over Ahn’s leadership, with Woo Deok-sun being the last to arrive. Meanwhile, Itō is informed of the assassination plan but refuses to cancel the public reception at Harbin railway station.
The team contacts Ms. Gong, a former ally in the independence movement who is now an arms smuggler, for explosives to blow up Itō’s train. However, they can’t get the explosives quickly in Vladivostok, so Gong gets them from her brother-in-law, a former independence fighter turned bandit in Jilin. Due to this delay, it becomes too late to carry out the assassination in Changchun.
Who is the traitor among the soldiers?

As the team heads to China, they are ambushed by Russian and Japanese soldiers led by Mori, and the explosives are destroyed. The team begins to suspect that there is a mole among them. On the train to Harbin, they set up a trap with fake information, claiming Ahn’s team will attack a railway station where Itō will switch trains before reaching Harbin. The trap reveals that Kim Sang-hyun is the traitor.
Woo Deok-sun and Kim Sang-hyun reach the changing station, where Japanese troops, led by Mori, are waiting. Woo Deok-sun confronts Kim Sang-hyun about his betrayal, and Kim Sang-hyun breaks down before Woo Deok-sun can shoot him. A flashback shows that Kim Sang-hyun had been captured and tortured by Mori with gas. Mori then bursts into the room and aggressively interrogates them about Ahn, realizing that Ahn must be in Harbin.
Ahn realizes that Kim Sang-hyun is the mole but believes he can regain his loyalty if given a chance. Respecting Ahn’s wishes, Woo Deok-sun agrees. Ahn also feels obligated to save Kim Sang-hyun’s life since Kim saved him during the opening battle—a life for a life.
What happens to Ahn? How does Harbin movie end?

At the Harbin railway station, Ahn is briefed by Gong about the situation. After the meeting, the dignitaries leave the train carriage, and Ahn follows them through the crowd on the platform. Mori tries to catch Ahn, but Gong knocks him down, giving Ahn the chance to shoot Itō multiple times while shouting “Long live Korea!” in Russian before being captured.
News of Itō’s assassination spreads, and Ahn is hanged in March 1910. Later, Mori meets with Kim to convince him to infiltrate Kim Ku’s independence movement, but Kim stabs Mori to death and rejoins Gong and a recently released Woo. A flashback shows that Ahn had instructed Woo to give Kim a second chance. Harbin Movie ends with Ahn, on the frozen Tumen River, reflecting on the need to keep fighting for Korean independence, no matter how hopeless it seems.
